Can IP address of uploaders be traced?
« on: July 21, 2008, 06:55:30 am »
Hi guys, just wondering.. after you upload/download a file on WinMX, does it leave a trace of your IP address in the other person's computer?

I know that's the case with Kazaa - when u upload a file to someone on Kazaa, if the file transfer isn't 100% completed, the other person's computer is left with the incomplete file (download.dat file) and dbb file. These download.dat and dbb files contain information such as the name of the incomplete file, and which IP addresses were sharing that particular file. This means that if someone's computer is seized and their incomplete Kazaa download file analyzed, u can find out who the person downloaded that file from (i.e. u can catch the uploaders too, if necessary).

I was wondering if this is possible with WinMX too. When u download a file from WinMX, does the file/incomplete file contain information about which IP address it was downloaded from? Is the IP address of the uploader recorded anywhere in the computer (e.g. in registry or wherever)?
I do know that if a transfer is interrupted WinMX creates an "incomplete downloads.txt" file containing info about the download such as local path, remote path, expected size, user ID, server, and entry time, but I don't think it contains the IP address of the uploader.

If anyone knows anything about this please reply.. Thank you!  :)

Hi Dkshk11

To answer your question... you can trace the ip during an upload or a download only when connected to a person. However, it is lost after that you have finished that file or you have been disconnected (from my understanding).

I've never seen an 'incomplete downloads.txt' file ever using WinMX or OpenNap.

Winmx doesnt save any of the information you mentioned.  WinMX uses a hash system to find sources of files when you restart the program and if the sources you originally got the file from are not on the network but others with matching files are, it will resume from those.

WinMX does leave a marker on the files that are not complete in order for the program to load/clear them from the transfers screen and with information about where to resume the file from, but any other information is not kept.

Hope this helps.

And there is no way the information can be hidden when the connection is on. The computer has to know where to send the data otherwise it will never reach you.

And no information can be retrived about the ip after connections are closed...

Cheers :P
Reconnect to winmx with the blocking patch :)
