WinMX Community Patch - Release Day Announcement
« on: September 15, 2008, 09:14:50 pm »
First of all let me thank you all for your help and patience and the teams behind the scenes who have been doing a fantastic job in bringing the whole project to a close, this includes Eagle, Nylly, Deux, Micromecca Nobby and Me_Here, The main part of the project was mainly to update the whole WinMX connection system we use to one provided by Eagle who has done a great job in working with everyone else here to complete that phase.

Moving forward, the WinMX Community Patch testing phase was completed by you the forum members and many of the staff here and was helpful in resolving some of the many teething issues that arose from such a big project, new peer caches are already in place to take up the expanded load and our thanks go to those trusted users who take care of these vital points, cheers to you all  8)

Now to complete the entire upgrade we need to ask you all to update your patch to the WinMX Community Patch that has extra features and improved flexibility, the date for asking you all to do this will be the 23rd of September, although early birds will be able to get the first copies of it from 11.59 PM GMT on the 22nd , there is no demand for you to upgrade nor any rush, but this update will offer some vitally needed updates for the self management of the network and as such I ask you all to upgrade to this newer patch as speedily as you can, the new improvements will be noticed immediately and we hope you will all find the increased performance and added features are a hit with you all.

I will be posting an information sheet for those wanting to gather more information on the changes tomorrow, I hope you are all as satisfied as I am with the WinMX Community Patch.

My thank's and the thank's of the WinMX community go to all those who have helped or taken part in making this upgrade a reality, Its my belief this over-due upgrade will mark the start of an upwardly growing community as we work together once more to do what we enjoy best, Cheers to you all  8)

secunia PSI does say winmx is 'end of life' .... but the secunia site lists no vulnerabilities for the winmx 3.x series..... guess the thing was built a little too well... ;)

I am certainly looking forward to the very-soon release of the WinMX Community Patch! Let me give a hearty thank you to Eagle, Ghostship, Nylly, Tig, Deux, Micromecca, Nobby, Me_Here and all of the others who have worked hard on this! Thank you! Thanks too to those who found ways to keep the network going during the bleak time of the Frontcode shutdown three years back.

I am one that will not be taking the plunge immediately because I always err on the side of caution or whatever and wait until a large group have jumped into the pool before I tip-toe in myself. Given all of the talk and hopes for the patch, though, I will not be waiting long!

But, I have a couple of questions that were not covered on the Community Patch information page:

1)  Will this new installer basically overwrite the old host files or is there more to that part of it than that?

2)  Aside from being a community effort, I am trying to understand just how this new patch brings the groups together helps to maintain this unity. Were we using one set of peer caches and the other groups using different sets of them, so they will be combined with the use of the Community Patch or something?

3)  Will the patch be available in two versions (or one version wiith two install options; it does not matter) similar to what we are currently using: one version for people who have WinMX installed and are just updating and a second version for new users that will install WinMX as a whole before adding the Community Patch? I assume that this new patch will be visible for download on the root index page
Downloading is an addiction I do not want to give up.

1) it would need to undo what pie did to the hosts files to function... the km patch added one entry for the update bar but that seems to be unneeded now too...

2) it doesnt use code KM wrote (which i think is the biggest thing... for the pie holdouts anyway) and doesnt use dll lock-in (so -every- user is protected themselves... not dependant on a DLL using (again originally written by KM) primary for protection)... and of course it uses the user editable .ini which will allow the end user to control what the patch does and doesnt do and what peer caches it does and does not connect to...

3) dunno about that... but i would think it would make sense to... why re-download winmx when all you need is the patch? ... and putting it on the root page of this site would be a bad idea bandwidth wise... would be better to put it on a sublink (winmxworld.com/patch) or on a new 'patch.winmxconex.com'

and i hope im not stepping on any admin feet by (trying to?) answer the questions...

EDIT (i need to work on my punctuation, spelling and grammer... this mess might be a bit rough on the eyes)

Thanks SilverStripes and no your not stepping on any toes but I would like to add to this incase anyone else is wondering some of the same things.

First of all SilverStripes said all there is to be said I think about your first question Cobra.

As for the second, at present time Pie users are basically somewhat hostage to Sabre for caches, He and He alone controls that, so I think Im not being durrogatory by stating that fact. Any groups of Pie that are on board with this WinMX Community Patch, will/have received working caches again made by EaglE, and those caches will run side by side with the caches we use, and have also submitted a further Cache Index mxpie.co.uk where caches are pointed to from, further insuring that not only can no one person (domain holder) take his toys and go home causing huge problems for thousands of users but WinMX can easily run with one (not ideal but not the point) there are four of these now that insure longevity of the network.  This can also be added to if the need arises.  So this truly is a Community Patch/connection system.

The third question, the new installers are for WinMXv3.54 all operating systems, and WinMXv3.53 all operating systems.  There is no need for a patch only installer.  Deux has done a great job with these, and if it detects WinMX it will not affect anything accept whats needed as it installs ie; older patch, replace with new, host file with winmx.com entries, remove those entries.  This installer will also remove pglite and pie autoupdater as those are being replaced unilaterally now anyway.

Pie have their own version of the dll, their own update bar and will maintain their own users, of course we don't mind helping those users here and visa versa now :D  but the installers are the same for both groups.

You may notice there is no installer for 3.31, and I suppose this is as good a time as any to mention this.  We have decided as a group (all parties concerned) to stop support for these older clients.  There is a reason that Kevin originally updated these, many bug fixes, and issues resolved and we can no longer see any reason to continue that support.

As for hosting, yes the server that we use for this site does take a beating and although its working perfectly for its every day operations the (we hope) large scale uptake of this patch, will require that the downloads are actually handled on the patch.winmxconex.com domain.  We will of course be directly linking to any downloads we want now which is another bonus for all using Eagles WinMX Community Patch.

Just wondering if you installed winmx 3.53  but replaced the .exe  with winmx 354 .exe   do you use the 3.54  installer of the  new patch or the  3.53  installer ?

You will want to use the installer for the WinMX that you run.   If you want to change back to the other version, then you get that one.

Not long now people i seriosuly can not wait. I would like to say that after a lot of time and a lot of effort from the people named on the first page of this post, Winmx is growing. People thought that they could kill Winmx and they where proven wrong.

I think all in all we need to celebrate that.

Aswell as the domain WmW folks here will be hosting the patch for DL on, we have arranged 3 Pie mirrors, with the ability to move to 4, and we have an additional mirror that can be used to host both Pie and Wmw versions of the patch as required, frankly lets hope we need them all due to the number of DL's!!!!!
