uPnP router issues

Hi all,

Use this thread to post info about Routers which appear to have issues with the uPnP bit of the community patch.
Don't know what we can do about it but it might be helpful to have all the info in the one place.

Hi all
I experienced the new mx installer today for first time and had no luck with my config.
I let winmx go to default folder E:/program files/winmx (new empty folder) as xp is E:/
winmx is use is C:/program files/winmx
I ran the installer and let the setup wizard run.
During the process I was informed by setup that TCP nor UDP were open.
I let the wizard complete.
So then I enabled the ports the ports manually and closed mx.
rebooted my router and reopened winmx.
no-one could upload from me, so the UPnP didn't work for me.
IUPnP works fine for eMule, Shareaza & utorrent---- ports always get opened.

Thanks for the feedback Blades, I,ll pass this info along to Eagle so he can look at possible causes and remedies, it was always expected a quantity of routers would likely not be compatible but for the majority its been ok so far it seems.

Does the upnp only work on a fresh install of winmx with the patch  and will it detect if your winmx is already set to unable to accept incoming tcp and in/out udp packets and try and set the ports up ?

no you will have to change them, you do that by going to settings click on incoming udp and tick listen on port and put a port. Then do the same for tcp setings. and restart you mx. you also need your speed setting to be good too. if its on dial up or someting it wont let you choose to run primary change that in internet connection.  Then restart your winmx and it should do it all for you

There are a couple of misconceptions about the uPnP that I'm going to address here.

1. This is NOT the same as Windows uPnP in Services and will not require that service to be running.  Windows uses a different protocol then what routers use, and enabling that service is considered a risk.

2. Nothing has been altered with the winmx.exe just like in the past, so when your doing a new install of WinMX and it runs through the TCP and UDP connection tests those will most likely fail.  The WinMX program itself is not able to handle uPnP.
-----So after an install of WinMX open the WinMX Settings > Incoming TCP > Set this to the number you would like to have used, default is 6699.
-----Go to In/Out UDP set this to the number you would like WinMX to use, default is 6257.  Once this is done, you can close Settings and restart WinMX, the patch will now try to use uPnP forwarding to open those ports for you.
This will of course depend on whether your router supports uPnP, and if so whether its enabled which some are NOT enabled by default.  Also make sure that firewalls are set up correctly too.

3. This does not leave those port permanently open like port forwarding can, when you close WinMX the ports that were opened via uPnP will be closed, which can be actually safer then forwarding ports in some routers that don't physically assign ports to services.

4. The uPnP will only work for you if ports are set up in WinMX Settings.  This will work however on older installs of the WinMX Community Patch, so you can go set that now and use new ports or just set ports for the first time.  As long as the oledlg.ini file within your Program Files/WinMX folder, has the setting 'enabled'

/enableupnp 1
   - enabled
/enableupnp 0
   - disabled

5. If your an experienced user of your router, and have ports forwarded manually, Its probably best  for you to go in and disable the /enableupnp 0, because your already set up and working fine.
If you must play like some of us must, then find new ports to use in WinMX that are not forwarded manually.  Some routers do have conflicts with ports being opened manually then having upnp settings thrust upon them.

Remember the uPnP feature is no guarantee that all routers will work at all times, its simply a feature that will hopefully help some of the less able new users to have less hassle setting up a working WinMX.  Which has proven to be the case already.

What I'd suggest ppl do is send an email to the Supervisor of your choice..
In it include the following:

Your router make and model.
Small instructions (if you can) about getting logged in, and navigating to the upnp settings.
A screen shot is of course great if you can also, some users need visuals.

Then we can make a small list of those on a site page for easy access for us or new users to get help with that.

UPnP doesn't seem to work with a Linksys WRT54G router (can anyone else confirm?).

Would http://miniupnp.free.fr/ be of use to UPnP in WinMX? I've noticed other file-sharing programs are utilizing it.

I can confirm that this does work for Linksys WRT54GS firmware v1.51.0

This screen shot is from the user I'm aware of named Snick, thanks to him for providing this.

Log into the Linksys interface, select Administration then near the bottom you should see where to Enable/Disable uPnP in the router.

It is enabled and always has been.

That's a slightly different model, by the way.
