Issues with new ISP
« on: October 02, 2008, 02:51:50 am »
Hi,

I'm a long-time user in Bangkok. Problem is I have to change my ISP just recently and my new ISP must have something that WinMX doesn't like because I can now download at very low speeds like 0.38 kbps and no one can search me at all. I can't tell what it is but some people at the local web board says my ISP uses proxy.

My settings are correct (port forwarding and all) and I'm using Vista. Earlier with my old ISP, they work fine.

Does someone ever experience issues with their ISPs blocking P2P or something like that? If so, is there a way to overcome this limitation?

Thanks in advance.

Hi Taksina,

Without knowing more about how your ISP operates its hard to suggest to you what is the cause of this.  Usually if uploads all time out that would suggest issues with port forwarding or with a firewall on the system.

First make sure your ports are open by going here:
http://winmx.dnsalias.com/scan/scan.cgi

If this says your TCP is open then yes, the ISP may have issues.
I expect this will tell you that your TCP is closed.  Then we need to recheck port forwarding, and make sure WinMX is allowed with ports in either Vista firewall, or firewall you use now, or both.
And also make sure Windows Defender (if you have it running) WinMX is allowed.

You can also try setting ports in WinMX to 'Unable', Go to Settings > Incoming TCP > set to Unable.
Open In/Out UDP > Set to Unable.
Restart WinMX as Secondary user, and see if things work correctly. (if they do work like this, your ISP is NOT to blame).

Hi Me Here,

I've tried scanning ports (6699 and 6257) and here's what I got:

=======================
TCP port 6699 is open, but wrong WinMX response. File operations (up/downloads and browsing) including chatroom hosting will probably fail due to this. The cause could be ISP interference or another program listening on port 6699

UDP port 6257 seems open but could be stealthed. So, searches and chatroom listings 'should' be okay.
=======================

I don't use any firewall part from the default Vista provides and it's allowed. Same goes for Windows Defender. Will try the unable trick and let you know.

Thank you so very much for your response

I've tried the "unable" trick and got the same results. Downloading is dead slow and nobody visits me. I can search fine though which makes it all the more hurtful :-(

Should I kill the folks at my ISP? :-)

The fact that using it in unable mode seems to get you the same slow results does make me think its the ISP.  I think it would be a good idea for you to stop by the room however, and let some folks we know are in good working order test your uploads and see if we can find anything there.

The room is:
WinMXWorld.com Help_AE182F4EBABE

Just use that in the filter bar of MX and click Join, tell them you are having issues uploading and downloading and need some live ppl to test with.  Be patient we dont always watch that screen 24/7 but will try to help as soon as we can there.

Me Here, nice to meet you in Chat room a while ago. And thanks again for your help. The inability to use WinMX does make me consider switching my ISP. Can I use uTorrent or some other P2P applications with similar results?

Utorrent is likely to have better results as its able to use some better encryption depending on where you get files I believe, and there are some p2p systems although its nearly sacralige to mention them on a winmx site.. lol

Filetopia, soul seek, and there are prolly a few others, none as good as winmx but more usable and less likely to be throttled.

It was also very nice to meet you in the chat and I hope you do let us know how you get on.
