Did L.A. meet the deadline?
« on: May 03, 2009, 10:30:21 pm »
I stumbled upon this story:
http://consumerist.com/consumer/wifi/la-citywide-free-wifi-by-2009-236566.php

And several like it. and decided maybe we could do our own news snooping instead of posting links from other sites and find out what came of this project and the other free city wide wifi's and the problems they could pose on P2P.

Another one ill start for any one who wants to dig is the Philadelphia area.
In 2006 eathlink had a paid 20 dollar per month wifi but backed out when they only got 5k subscribers. a big shortage compared to their estimated 100k.
A map of the proposed area is given here http://www.wirelessphiladelphia.org/wireless_areas.cfm
But it doesn't say how much coverage their actually is or how the project is coming along.

Some other cities that have this are,New Orleans, Mountain View, Cambridge, Dayton, San Francisco, Spokane, Palo alto. Berlin ,Milpitas, Seattle , Dublin , and Corvallis.

The providers of these seem to be listed in some fashion or another which might help us to see what blocking etc may arise.
This trend could continue and maybe one day we will all be on free wifi.

It would be nice to think that municipal authorities could give ISPs a bit of competition. A few have tried it and failed. Mainly due to lack of finance and the technical know how to run it efficiently.

That was sort of the theme here bees.
to get people to do some digging into projects in their areas and post back with the news.
a couple of those are doing well but ill let the community discover wich ones   :-D
sadly though alot of these are using local ISPs as a backbone the info of wich ones are and what they are using could help us in the future if these become popular.
