Pat-Australia,
Welcome to the boards...
The reason for the 'upgrade' is not because the makers of WinMX have released a new version. On or around Sept. 16th the RIAA sent several p2p network software makers a letter threatening them with expensive litigations if they did not stop their services. The owners of the WinMX software aka WinMX Technologies shut down the Peer Caches used to get us connected to each other in complience to this letter.
The users however decided that wasnt going to happen, and kept this network up until some other form of Peer Caches could be set up. In order for your WinMX to find these new Peer Caches and connect you will need to get a patch and install it. It is recommended that you also upgrade to WinMX v. 3.53 for 98/ME or WinMX v 3.54 for XP/2000 operating systems.
Keep in mind however that if you would prefer to keep your older Version of WinMX this is possible also by doing the following.
You can rename the folder that contains your WinMX 3.3 to C:\Program Files\WinMX 3.3 for example.
Then go to the address below and download the Install 1.9.exe file. This will give you the latest version of WinMX. You can then 'try it out' so to speak. If you arnt happy with the latest version of WinMX simply go to the folder and find the file named '
ws2_32.dll' and move it to the WinMX 3.3 folder. now restart your 3.3, by double clicking the
WinMX.exe file it should connect just fine.
Once your sure it connects fine you can now delete the folder named
C\Program Files\WinMX - that contained the upgraded version with Patch.
and replace it with your original
C:\Program Files\WinMX 3.3 = = rename this to WinMX after moving your patch
ws2_32.dll.
