Hi CSJ,

Here is a guide for your Westell 6100 for fowarding ports. you have to open these ports to allow computers to communicate with yours.  Everything should work fine when its finished.

Thank you for the web link to set up my router.  To re-cap a bit.  I'm using W98SE and my DSL service is with Verizon using their Westell 6100 modem (router).  I'm getting uploads and downloads now due to your guidance.  My problem is with the guide for setting up the router.  I'm using 16699 for the Incoming TCP port and 16257 for the UDP port.  There is a bit of confusion on my part with the drop down box where it lists the "custom" entry that one has made.  When I first configured the port I only had one choice labeled WinMX1 and this only had The TCP as 16699 for the incoming.  I started over and ended up (after trial and error) with the same "custom" WinMX1 with TCP 16699 in and UDP 16257 out.  I selected this WinMX1 and enabled it.  This service is shown and the existing service that came programed into the Verizon Westell 6100 is also shown.  Apparently you can have more than one choice existing at the same time or should I have hit delete for the existing service.  With all of this garble in mind should I have had The TCP 16699 in for WinMX1 as a choice by itself and a second choice of UDP 16257 out for WinMX2 and enabled them separately in which case I would list three services, WinMX1, WinMX2 and the existing Verizon service.

Thank You for your help so far.

In 'most' router/DSL modems its necessary to list them as two separate rules.

However, that said if your uploads and downloads are working then its probably ok to leave as is.  If you have problems with your browses, pms, whois..then that could be a sign of the two conflicting and in that case you may wish to make them two separate rules for WinMX.

Port forward has to be commended for the great work they do trying to keep up on all applications, and all new routers and modems.. its not easy I can assure you.  So they show the standard 'Default' ports that WinMX is set to use being 6699 and 6257.  There is NO reason what so ever that you cant make those ports what ever you like really.  So 16699 and 16257 are just fine.. they just cant show you every port possible and the instructions are meant to be examples of how to proceed..

Let us know if you have any further troubles ..

Thank you for your prompt reply on this holiday weekend.  I may try the separate two rules rather than the single "catch-all" rule that I have set up in the Westell 6100 modem/router.  I will let you know if there is a change.
Thank you again,
CSJ
