Upload/download problems
« on: January 20, 2006, 08:15:53 pm »
Hi group, I too have been a long time user of WinMX (4yrs) as primary user.  I have started a new computer with XPpro SP2.  Have done the updates and am now using latest WINMX.  I've been able to signon as secondary and no problems for uploads/downloads & searches.  When I try primary I get very low search results (1 to 10 items) and uploaders are timing out quite frequently.  Downloads are timing out sporadically also.  I have turned OFF my XP firewall no difference.  I have set my router forwarding to 17205-17215tcp and 16290-16305udp.  Winmx settings are 17210 tcp & 16300 udp.    I would like to set the triggering but I just can't grasp values to put in "trigger port range" and "incoming port range"   I would like to get the primary up and running because I too feel that I can help the network.  I normally leave my MX running 24/7 when in primary mode.  Is setting the triggering going to help.  When running previous versions of WinMX on WINME I only had to set the "forwarding ports", no triggering was required.  Will this help now?  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

XPpro SP2
Linksys Router BEFSX41
Cable Modem
WimMX  V3.53 with patch

Forwarding ports works in exactly the same way on XP as 98 or ME as it's a function of networking rather than windows (so even the same under linux).
As long as your router will support the number of forwarding rules set, then there's no real need to move to triggering instead.

Erratic behaviour can be caused by many things on a primary, the biggest concern & most common reason at present is unprotected hosts file users allowing flooders to use their primary to attack WinMX.

If you're using a hosts file (pie patch) I STRONGLY urge you to either install PeerGuardian 2 as outlined here

https://www.winmxworld.com/tutorials/block_the_riaa.html

or alternatively uninstall Pie & use the patch from www.winmxgroup.com which includes the necessary blocking.

Thanks for your response.   I'm sorry I didn't tell you that I have installed Peer Guardian also.  My hosts file has been cleared since I installed the latest version of WinMX so they are not involved either.  Still not working properly on the Primary connection.  Uploads, downloads working well but the search is terrible.  Search for beatles brought back no responses!  Maybe I'm still missing the boat.

Lynda, could it be that the IP assigned to your pc has changed?

Please make sure the configured IP is the same one as in the forwarding rule on your router and that the router is set as default gateway also.
Please let us know if this helps or if you need any help on this :)

IP address has not changed and router is set for the same address in forwarding.  I don't quite understand where I would check that the router is set as "default gateway"  can you steer me in the right direction for that.
Thanks

You should be able to see your configuration if you look at the status or properties of your (LAN) connection.
Alternatively you could open a DOS box and type    ipconfig /all
You should be able to put in the router IP as your default gateway in the TCP/IP properties of your network connection to the router.

IP default gateway is correct according IPCONFIG/all.  Thanks again for your time and patience.  I'm really at a loss as to what else to try.  Do I dare convert my WINME system over to the WINMX v.3.53 or do I just leave well enough alone?.

on Win ME you'll need to be using 3.53 with the olepro32.dll as there are I understand problems using the 98/ME patch with 3.54 beta (which is why install2.0 installs this on 9x based systems).  If you're running two systems make sure winmx has DIFFERENT ports assigned on each & forwarded to each.

If you're in a DUAL BOOT situation, on one pc using a single copy of winmx, use the install for 98/ME, as this will work under XP while the XP version won't under ME.

Sorry for the misunderstanding, I have 2 computers: one is new with WinXP pro the other is still running WinME.     The WinME system is still running WINMX 3.53 with the modified hosts file.   It is working great in all respects.  I was considering installing the patch to get rid of the host file fix but now I'm not sure since the WinXP system with the patch is having all of the difficulties.
Thanks again.

Hi pussnboots,

I need just a bit of clearing up here..

Are you using your Cable internet or the dial up?
Confuguring them is different and the advice and help would be also.

Who is your Cable internet provider?
Do you also have a router on this network somewhere?

What firewalls do you use?
What antivirus?

Have you tried setting your ports to Unable in the Incoming TCP and IN/OUT UDP.. restart as secondary?  Many times this will work also but your unable to get a primary this way..

Okay PussnBoots,

There are two ways we can fix you up here I think and get you sharing your files.
Keep in mind however, that just because you sign in as a secondary does not mean you are using a 'dial up' connection.

It is what a dial up user has to do, use secondary..

Folks on Cable or DSL can get just as fast of speeds, (sometimes faster) using a secondary connection.

1) - You can go to your WinMx Settings > Internet Connections > Incoming TCP .. change this to 'Unable'
Now look at IN/OUT UDP .. change this to 'Unable'..
Once this is finished a restart of WinMx is needed.
This set up will not allow you to get a primary connection to WinMx but wont really limit your speeds, and should allow you to share files even behind the router.

2) - This way would require you to open certain ports for WinMx in the router.  More then likely its where the major blockage is now, not allowing folks to get your files.

First step to this is knowing what a port is for, what information you need to open them in your router.  This information has been written out fairly basically here:
Getting Started Forwarding Ports

This will lead you to Portforward.com for the rest of the instructions on your router.  Just follow along and do as the instructions say.
When finished you should be able to obtain a primary or secondary connection on WinMx, and chat lists, searches, and uploads should work.

Let me know if you have any more questions about this along the way..

Connection Reset by Peer" (red)

This means there was an error with the connection between you and the user, so you were disconnected. This may happen if either your PC or the user you were downloading from's PC is running slow, and halts WinMX for a few seconds, but may also be caused by other things In most cases you should be able to retry if this happens.
To retry, right click the user, and click "Retry
the no route to to host error message = that user is no longer online
