File Filter Syntax ???
« on: February 15, 2006, 04:49:26 pm »
I Have A Question Regarding The File Filter Syntax

I understand Why We Need The Filter. However, It Would Appear To Me That
We Are Missing Files When Searching. The Reason Being That Not Everyone
Has Their Files Shared On C:Drive. I Personally Have 3 Drives. C For The
OS And Programs. D For Back Up And Data. S (SATA) Where My Mx Upload
DIR And Movies Are Located. I Understand We Can Just Replace The Drive
Letter With D To Search All Shared Files Located On D.

So In My Case What Would be The Correct Filter To Search C D & S ???

Hi Wombat the correct filter is currently -user , is is no longer necessary to use -c in the lower box, this is because they are not continuing to flood from a file path containing c:.

The -c  - (minus) symbol is used soley to obtain results from any drive except c :
I hope that makes it clear, I will get the picture from the blocking fakes tutorial updated to reflect this change in their activity.

Hey Wombat,

Let me see if I can clear this up a bit.

The filters that we were using are -c: -user.  The reason is before the great rebirth there where two file paths the flooders used.

C:\documents and settings\wierdusernamehere\My documents\bogus file
\user\files\bogus file

Eliminating the user file path is easy its a simple step of typing -user in the search.
Eliminating the c: drive file path was harder, for simplicity we asked for typing -c: and when real files where found you go to your transfers screen and right click the file and choose 'Find Sources Now' or 'Search For Alternatives'  ..either would re-introduce the legitimate C: Drive users back into your results.

Thankfully the latter of those is not necessary at this time.  You can successfully eliminate 99.9% of fakes by using the -user filter in your searches,  there are almost no real users with this file path so we are not loosing out on legitimate sources with this one.

I hope this answers your questions about the drive letters, your files will come up that are located on E: F: S: drives in either instance.. the C: is the main drive folks share from and was a bit of a trick to get more sources and eliminate fakes at the same time.

Also in re-reading your post, let me also make clear that Winmx doesnt only search C drives by default, names and Hashes are what are used to give results in searches, so unless you use a - sign to eliminate or a ~ sign to include a word, letter or number WinMx will just look at all shared files uploaded to the primary in order to return your results.

hope this helped and not confused more..  :P
