Online?????
« on: October 08, 2010, 07:19:39 am »
:hurt: for the last 4 months it seems like less and less are on WinMx sharing. i used to type in ALBW and get over 3k hits, now (20 minutes ago) i had 42. whats going on? is everyone quitting WinMx? i tried chat and it showed only 2 rooms open both had 9/200 in the. i'm getting frusterated, no one is sharing anymore. i have over 3k files in my library that i share and haven't denied anyone from recieving from me. i have been a loyal user of WinMx for the last 6 years. is it just me or is everyone leaving?
dammit! i did it again.

actually theres around 700 channels so that in and of itself shows that somethings wrong with your connect...

what patch are you using? are you connected as primary or secondary? do you have a router between your computer and the modem?

if you can upload to others, but not download, its possible its a router/firewall/ports issue,
i dont know anything on routers, except most have built-in firewalls,
a lot of people use a firewall on pc as well as routers built-in, thinking its better,
well, its not, it causes 90% of connection & up/download problems.

well now i'm really confused. the setup (modem, router....etc.) hasn't changed in almost 2 years. didn't have any trouble till the last 4 months or so. it just gradually got less and less search results. like i said 4 months ago i was able to put "albw" in the search and get over 3k hits....but now (10 minutes ago) i get between 2 and 42 hits. i will look into my router and modem and see if anything is screwing things up for me. oh, i went to the chat link you sent me and got through to the room. there were 32 people in there and waited 15 minutes before leaving the room. thanks for the help :) i appriciate it.
dammit! i did it again.

ok lets think, if nothing has changed, what connection you use?  winmxworld/eagle patch or pie hosts file?
do you use peer guardian?
because this causes major problems when using eagle's patch or when using the wrong blocklist when on pie hosts,

the safest way is, remove peer guardian if you have it, remove pie if you have it, install the latest eagle patch or uninstall winmx and do a fresh install,

I have a feeling that if you look at your router's log you will notice lots of floods/attacks that are being blocked, the bigger the result of a search you expect to get ...the bigger the chance a router will think it 's being attacked/flooded
This would most likely happen on searches and roomlist requests

Because you say this all used to work ok I would start by checking if your internal IP is set to be static, if not ..there is a chance this IP has changed for some reason and that would mean the IP the ports are opened for is now wrong

walking trough the steps at portforward.com could help you rule out port and IP troubles

I dont know if it would affect numbers that greatly, but a lot less people are using Albumwrap now too, theres other wrappers that are more reliable and less inclined to break.
There's also an increasing number of people who use zip files, where an album's worth of files, AND Pics, are encased in a 'Store' (non compressed) .zip file, and then the .mp3 extension is appended, so the file is playable, like an ALBW
many Albumwrapusers alo do not include the traditional ALBW designation in the filenames too

Just remember that...

i guess that makes sense. i never trusted downloading .zip files, last time i did that i got trojaned. so if i am looking for albws i type in zip instead? hmm....maybe that is my whole problem...i always do albw searches. the single searches that aren't albw don't really get hits much either. thanks :)

norton IS a virus,
try uninstalling it,  its all over the place, (just like a virus) very hard to remove, (just like a virus)
and last i heard you need to get a special removal tool off of norton that accepts only a valid serial/license that you've paid for, or it wont uninstall.

Take it from me that Norton is far from being the best and can cause problems. I have first hand experience of this and got rid of Norton a while ago. It's supplied free on new PCs because Norton do a deal with the supplier. It's not installed because it is the best.

I'm not sure, but here is the official removal tool.

http://us.norton.com/support/kb/web_view.jsp?wv_type=public_web&docurl=20080710133834EN&ln=en_US

Even after you have used it it's still worth doing a search of your pc for Norton or Symantec and deleting any trace manually.

I'm not using Norton, but I know that Norton has really improved over the past 3 years. It seems Norton is not a resource hog anymore. I installed it on my parents PC, and some of my friends. It is really fast, and light on resources now.  I use Online Armor / NOD 32/ Avira AV/ Prevx /Appguard / Shadow Defender/ on most of my PCs.  Not all on the same PC of course.
