blocklist: err 4
« on: October 25, 2010, 12:01:33 am »
Hello

We had a WinMX error pop up saying to forward our log file to eagle@hackroom.org

Error was shown as

24/10/2010 17:29:48 problems with the blocklist: err 4

Please advise what action should be taken at my end.

Regards

Steed

well would nt this be simple?

it did not get the blocklist (corectly) and Eagle would like to have the error/bug report (that is if he still is intrested :/)

I would suggest replacing the patch in the first instance as there are some out there with a rare and obscure bug and this may make the question redundant, follow the link at the top of the page for the patch site.

would n t a restart do the trick? it might just be connected to cache with a failing blocklist

still be nice to know what error 4 is... its done it to me on two community patch variants and even 'latest' from the patch site.... (is there one newer than early 2010?)

is it a timeout? is it an inability to connect? incomplete data? corrupt data? no data?

.....

after being a bit nosy seems 'err 4' is an 'unknown error' ....

Quote
it did not get the blocklist (corectly)
actually it would say if it didnt get it correctly.... or at least it would say it couldnt load what it got...

Quote
and Eagle would like to have the error/bug report (that is if he still is intrested )

is he?

....er... actually hackroom.org doesnt seem to have an IP address anymore so... guess not...

We do have the patch src so it is possible to get some idea of what the error is but as with anything its a matter of priorities and atm this is more an annoyance than a critical issue but rest assured I will find out what this is and report back in the next few days just I dont have the time to look through it right away, thanks for your interest and patience folks  :)

It seems this problem is bigger than I was lead to believe, please let me know in future folks if theres any major problems as if its just one or two folks its likely to be a local issue whereas if its pretty widespread immediate action is necessary, I,m investigating this as a priority issue now, my apologies for the delay to anyone affected.

on 14 Aug I had one...

The entire contents of my log.txt file:

Quote
14/08/2010 17:40:25 problems with the blocklist: err 4

Highly informative...

From the initial analysis this error is related to a time out error for retreiving the blocklist from the caches, the blocklist itself was checked to be ok and so increased monitoring of the blocklist delivery system from the caches will be needed to locate the one thats a bit slow for some reason or another, we have had issues with ddos attacks before on some of the caches and it that is found to be the case the remedy is to deploy even more caches to thwart such antics.

The patch will not rest with this error but will attempt to reload the list again after a time interval so dont be too worried if this message appears, its purely for information and wont affect any crucial functions.

too bad theres not a 'debug' or 'verbose' option in the oledlg.ini that could be turned on... would make tracking down the sluggish/broken cache server easier...

instead of "error with blocklist: err 4" it would be something like "error with blocklist: timeout on cache server xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx"

...time for a patch 1.1 perhaps? ;)

A splendid idea Stripes, however I would rather continue to press ahead with a client than make the effort to change everyones patch in a general upgrade although there are benefits to both options in the short term.

3rd party alternative perhaps? (wireshark?) something that basically 'waits' for winmx to talk on the port for blocklist... logs that traffic... and if there is an error 4 in the log at the same time then at least we would have our culprit(s)...
