We all know its illegal to sign another persons chequebook dont we folks, it seems President Obama thinks he can sign treaties that bypass congressional authority.http://www.techdirt.com/articles/20111012/10072216326/senator-wyden-asks-president-obama-isnt-congress-required-to-approve-acta.shtml
As the US Trade Rep (USTR) under the Obama administration has made it clear that it has no intention of allowing Congress to ratify ACTA, but instead believes it can sign it unilaterally, we've finally seen someone in Congress notice that this appears to be unconstitutional. Senator Wyden has sent President Obama a letter asking some basic questions. The letter also responds to the repeated claims of the USTR that it can have this signed as an executive agreement because it doesn't require changes to US law, by pointing out that's not the rule.
Let us hope the President takes the time to consider that its not his right to sign the US up to international trade agreements, its enshrined in US law that this area of legislation is strictly under the control of congress and to attempt to sign this into US law as it is currently written would be an impeachable offense.
