Dodgy Lawyer Faces Jail For P2P Filesharing Scam

A US lawyer could be jailed for up to 10 years for helping to upload porn films to file-sharing sites and then sue people who downloaded them.
Paul Hansmeier has pleaded guilty to charges of wire fraud and money laundering for his part in the Prenda Law piracy scheme. Prenda is believed to have made about $3m (£2.3m) from the scheme.
His guilty plea is part of an agreement that will ensure he does not receive a sentence longer than 150 months.

This "lawyer" had the idea that folks wouldnt argue their case in court because of the names of some of the adult titles allegedly infringed, he was relying on their embaressment to settle with him rather than face the publicity a court case brings, however it stands to reason that if he had the authority to share the film online via a licencing agreement it cannot possibly be an infringing copy and there lies the problem, his infringement claims and payment demands mysteriously never mentioned that he was a licensed distributor for the specific movie titles and was also the one behind the sharing, something that would have seen any of his cases thrown out if they had reached court, let us hope he receives some unwanted attention in prison

I've been following the case for a while in the news. The guy is scum as are his associates. I read one of them already died before the case came forward, easy escape for ruining peoples lives with harmful debts and extortion.

Hmm, this story has been a while in the telling, I first came across Prenda law and its scamming activity when it was spoken of on Slycks P2P news forum a long while ago, I cant believe its taken all this time for the authorites to catch up with this band of "unwashed" characters, scum is certainly a good term for them but I have little hope of any real justice in this matter as the same scam is undertaken by many other organisations besides Prenda and theres little political appetite to bring anyone to justice when according to some extreme anti-filesharing  folks filesharing etc are sources of revenue for terrorism 

A lie it seems is like a snowball going down hill.
