It would be recommended that you forget about MXPie 3.2 for several
reasons and get the patch provided by this site. You can download it at
https://www.winmxgroup.com/downloads.html     if you already have WinMx
installed download "Patch on its own (for existing installs)".If You
don't have WinMX installed choose one of the other options that best
suits you.**Note** Make sure you shutdown WinMX before installing the
patch.Once the patch is installed start your WinMX and enjoy

How about trying our patch instead of MXP ?  It's available Here <--<< clickable link

I seem to remember that the installer fixes an absent localhost entry, it may also fix absent hosts file, if not, well it doesn't rely on hosts to connect, only for the update bar message.

Or drop by the help chatroom
WinMXWorld.com Help_9F40E3D40D3D
where someone will be happy to investigate your hosts file & talk you through fixing it if it is indeed missing, I hesitate to post instructions here as the location varies according to windows version, & since you don't state which you're using I'd have to cover all bases.. which is potentially confusing

Thanks Reef and Beard.

I installed the file from this site.  However, I am not connecting.  I have windows XP.  I am using a secondary connection.  I use to be able to connect with older versions of WinMX.

No sure what to do next.

try removing winmx from your firewall & re allowing it, it's common for firewalls to block programs that have changed (after upgrades) to prevent ones that have changed by being infected by viruses connecting, hence having to take manual action to re allow

I did what you said.  WinMX was a program listed as an exception under Window's firewall.  I removed it, and re-selected it...restarted WinMX...still no luck.  Just get the finding network connection with the bleeping yellow

:)

I have been reading some other threads.  FYI - I opened options in WinMX - TCP outgoing and selected no proxy, and variations thereof...along with second/primary...still no luck

try with the firewall disabled, just long enough to test, if the light then goes green you have the problem identified

Bearded Blunder:

I tried that...it doesn't help.  I even re-installed everything, WinMX and the patch...still same result.

Very disappointed.  I have been with WinMX for years.

I tried joining the WinMX group.  I pasted the link and clicked join...but nothing happened.

What's up with the OpenNap network?  Any other suggestions?  Get your thinking cap on!

Thanks for your efforts so far.

Bearded Blunder:

For WinMX to run, does the user only need an Internet connection or is there something more going on, different from previous versions?  The reason I ask, is that I am piggybacking on a neighbor's wireless router.  I use Netgear.  I can connect to the Internet, and get assigned an IP address, Gateway, etc.  Just wondering if there is something going on with the router settings, set by the neighbor, that is preventing me from connecting, or simply having an Internet connection is sufficient.

David you should be able to get a secondary connection to WinMX if your WinMX Incoming TCP is set to Unable to ...and your In/out UDP is also set to Unable.

Can you please check your WinMX folder for the file OLEDLG.DLL and tell me if you see it?
Can you also please if you use a icon to start your WinMX from the desktop. please right click that choose properties, then choose the shortcut tab and tell me what the Target: path is?

1) Unables set
2) DLL file there
3) C:\Program Files|WinMX\WinMX.exe

I considered these things already based on other threads...that is why I am so stumped!!

Me Here, if you can solve this....I would be very grateful.

Since the MxPie installer seems to think your HOSTS file is missing - did you ever try to actually see if it's there?
Simply use the search function of xp and search for a file called "HOSTS"  (no extension) and see if it's present at all and where it's located.
That might bring us a step forward here I think :)

If you dont find a hosts file there is one that is a microsoft original located here:

https://www.winmxworld.com/files/original_hosts_file.zip

For XP users you unzip that to your

C:\Windows\system32\drvers\etc  folder

I have a hosts file in the location you specified.  HOWEVER, it is empty.  Is this the problem?  It was last modified 8/18/2006, so something (WinMX???)  is accessing it, but nothing is there.

it needs at minimum the line
Code: [Select]
127.0.0.1     localhost in it, or download the original hosts file linked to above, unzip & replace it with that

I just reset the outgoing TCP settings via the set-up Wizard.  It assigned a SOCKS4 proxy.  In the address it gives a dotted quad.  Where is WinMX coming up with this IP address?  Proxy login name is blank.

Could the problem relate to this.  As noted above, I tried alternates (w/o proxy), etc. and primary/secondary connections

if it was set to use a proxy server you probably put it in at some point, that would also explain why it's not connecting if you don't use a proxy server... set the proxy server as blank - or of course the simple way is to completely remove winmx (delete the entire winmx directory) then reinstall a clean patched winmx and let it go through the setup wizard again
