How can one ID fake file flooders
« on: October 01, 2005, 10:49:14 am »
I note there is an extensive list of fake filenames of numerous artists.

So I put in 'metalica' and get a gazillion fake hits..  How can one determine the IP of whoever is sending the false results?

is peerguardian or a firewall capable of detecting the flooders IP?

I now peerguardian can log all allows.  I have a 12GB+ daily file to prove it :)

I think the idea of 1] detecting fakers 2] confirming fakers] and adding them to a list is a great idea.  I am of the opinion that such intentional attacks, since they harm so many innocent people by overloading the peer network, are criminal.  And It appears that several lawyers are now circling the wagons to fight the RIAA crap.

http://recordingindustryvspeople.blogspot.com/

So.. for both purposes..
It appears easy to get their nicks, a targetted filename search does that.. but how can we: 1] determine the IPs of the offenders and 2] how can we get timestamped logs of the traffic so as to have evidence of the effect their DoS floods are having?

There is no magical answer to this question of finding the ips of the flooders.

We use special tools to identify these crimminal acts..

One very useful tool is the MXSniffer made by Nushi although its in Japanese many ppl have spent some time with this tool and know thier way around.  You can find this in our Archive in the Nushi folder.

Another useful tool is X- Net Stat

this will show you all connections both tcp and udp.. its virtually useless unless you can make a true primary connection to mx tho..

We need a magical answer :p

Some way for non-techies to participate in the project of finding and fending off these fake file flooders [FFF].

Months ago, someone posted FFF alerts and gave 'dodgeball' as an example.  Searching for 'dodgeball'  did produce the typical chaff list of fake files.  But how can one log this and link them to an IP?

I haven't ever used that MX sniffer thang yet, but will experiment.

Would this work:

Load MX sniffer
search for 'dodgeball'
browse the users listed who seems to have several dozen 'dodgeball' files
note that they have what appears to be several other sets of fake files for other popular key word matches.
bingo - a confirmed fake file flooder..

But would mxsniffer display their IP?
and could such results be logged for:
1] cause for adding that IP to the FFF blacklist
2] potential evidence of the criminal conspiracy to attack the WPN p2p infrastructure using the devious patented macrovision attack tools.  The mere fact they got a patent on such a weapon of mass disruption does not make it legal to use it when it has consequences for innocent users who are not sharing files RIAA/MPAA may have an interest in.  We will not be collateral damage in their war against 'pirates' ... not without protest, not without resistance, not without a fight.

But we newbies need to be provided with protective armor and self-defensive weaponry and be tutored on how to use them effectively in a communal resistance effort.  So equipped and trained, I think we can overwhelm the forces of evil that threaten our WPN global village and drive them back into their ivory walled castles.  We out-number them.  They can't afford to hire any number of mercenaries that we cannot defeat, if we have the tools and the knowledge to use them.

The current solution is in the hands of the blocking team as they will attempt to make sure that any of the fake Flooders never see your machine to connect to.

Thanx for bringing the list of independent artists you have posted here, I,m sure our readers will give them a listen as they chat and perhaps purchase or donate if they like the music, after all thats part of what the WPN is about, the free flow of works and knowledge between folks

Cheers Snarly  :D

Who is this 'blocking team'  and can they really detect a signicant portion of the FFF?

Wouldn't it be more thorough to have thousands of users detecting, logging and reporting fake file flooders?

No it would allow the teams blocklist to be infiltrated by recording industry folks who would try to have addresses added so they could attempt to discredit it later on.

I have no system set up to create a permanent legal log of their intrusions against our primaries and dont see that as something I need to do to protect mx users.

The team is the admin staff here.
