No new files are of any use any more....are they all fake files?

I think I have WinMX 4.7.3 if that is a version.

Every second music audio file I begin downloading lately , maybe even all of them, seems to have some kind of problem, either a message saying "mx player cannot play file is broken "when I attempt preview..or Realplayer must download additional components, which it never can find them...or these accursed "media usage agreements" which seems to  be a front for casino popup software etc.

I havent had a successful download lately. au formats, wma formats,nd formats,  even the usual MP3 formats,   nothing seems to work on either windows or Real.

3 songs Ive tried repeatedly to get.
 +"The In Crowd" by Phantom Planet
+ "Hine Ma Tov" by various

have we been mined by millions of fake files?

+ theme from OZ (the TV show)

numerous files started, half wouldnt start, the ones that did then had apparent tech issues..Phantom Planet  in crowd  in particular I must have made 20+ attempts..

Actually Im now wondering if it is even a genuine WinMX I have downloaded...the new version a couple of years back did have a completely reworked appearance, some liked features were gone, you never have this "5 of 16 available" stuff on files anymore.


How can I insure that is even a WinMX...I think I have gotten a few genuine songs on it months back, though..

You should run your antivirus and antispyware programs if you have them, to make sure you haven't picked up some nasties from this bogus winmx you've been using.

thanks...have uninstalled...is this thing frequently encounter? Anyone know of any associated programs I should look for that it might have fed through..

Hi HighIncident. As far as I know there's been fake/pay versions of WinMX ever since the original creator of MX was ordered to shut down his servers but make no mistake there is only 1 real WinMX and it is now and always has been free. You're the first person I've ever seen myself with any "MX" that isn't real, or at least that I've seen post here. I am glad you did too btw. The reasons you were getting those messages from Windows Media and Real Player is because unless something's changed they won't play broken partial files. My understanding is WinMX downloads from the beginning of the file to the end and that's why a lot of regular players will play a partial file from WinMX. Lots of p2p programs download bits and peices of files from the middle, the end, the beginning, and so on and in no specific order and for me that's why I call them broken because that's what they are until they're finished and only a handfull of players will let you preview them as far as I know of. If you installed WinMX from the address that reef posted you should be good to go now and I hope you enjoy a fully functional real WinMX from here out. And I hope my explaination of those errors help you understand why you were getting them.
