Last month, a US Court ruled that the Lime Group, the company behind Limewire, was liable for the copyright infringements committed by its users. Two weeks later the Lime Group asked the court to reconsider this judgment. This request was followed by one from the RIAA, asking the court to shut down Limewire via a permanent injunction.

The RIAA argues that Limewire’s operation has to be stopped immediately, to avoid it doing any more harm to the music industry in the future. Interestingly enough, very little argumentation or evidence is given for any real losses suffered by the record labels.

Only 1 small problem,
as far as im aware, and i have used limewire ages ago, its is riddled with viruses,
we dont want their virus infested users on winmx, because we are virus free here,
limewire was supposed to be closed down some years ago when it was clean,
suddenly its allowed to continue as viruses run riot, like its deliberate.

Megadittos to what Max says above.  I work part-time as a PC consultant, generally fixing people's problems with their home PCs.  Nowadays, when I get called in to work on someone's PC that has been badly infected, one of the first things I do is look for Limewire.  Invariably, I'll find it - I don't think there's been a single case yet where Limewire wasn't at least present on the machine.  Many times, the users tell me that the problems started happening after their kids downloaded something from Limewire.  Some of the nastiest infections I've ever seen (rootkits, backdoors, etc.) have been installed via a Limewire download.

I hate having to tell these people "sorry, but your personal privacy has probably ALREADY been violated.  I can fix your PC but there's nothing I can do about your information.  Cancel any credit cards you've ever used on the computer, then move to a different address and legally change your name too".

If I remember correctly, several years ago WinMX looked like it was starting to go down this same road - there were some nasties available here too.  Fortunately, I think the problem here corrected itself - I haven't seen any problems on WinMX in years.

I agree with everything Max and Beerslayer have said. Limewire deserves to be closed down if only for the amount of viruses that it promotes.

i think if winmx became as popular to certain users as limewire is we would start facing the same problem rapidly, it's the uncaring users causing this ... they click anything and if it aint what they were looking for they even reshare the shit on the network

little example.. a kid looking for a hit song does a search for it and merely clicks dozens of matches to just get it fast, this user does n t even view the file so if the title matches it gets choosen no matter that the extention is n't even mp3 (or one alike) ..they even click exe files to get a HITSONG
they trully click anything no matter the size or filetype

i ve personally experienced this on one of my journeys to repair someones PC, i noticed what the kid in that house was que-ed for on limewire, had a talk with her the next day..asking her why and trying to explain what she was doing..this kid did not care at all and thought i was a big pain in the butt taking up her precious time

the only thing winmx offers as extra protection against this way of downloading is the warning sign(dangerous file message) for rar, exe etc files, unfortunately it can also be switched off

I would like to say that the RIAA are working far to hard and need to give it a rest. However if i said that i would be lying, the only thing they need to give rest to is us users. They need to stop interfering and let us be. Whatever happened to Freedom and being able to have free rights.

...there are folks out there that know what they are doing... ...tho i doubt the 'clicks everything' type would disable that warning instantly.... it might actually work...

also for the 'shared back' thing... since winmx isnt 100% win7(and vista) compatible it would take someone asking questions to get those files shared back...

as for an inrush of users... well.. if it does happen (im not quite sure it will but an inrush of the smarter limewire users... if they exsist... would be nice) lets hope it happenes after the pie.info site and the new patch are rolled out cos it would cause even more confusion if not.....

you do have a point there Stripes, this kind of user would not go this far even if the message points to program settings to switch it off

also for the 'shared back' thing... since winmx isnt 100% win7(and vista) compatible it would take someone asking questions to get those files shared back...

i disagree on this one .. you ld be amazed how compatible MX is on Win7, if only the folder paths are set up correctly (avoiding the standard win7 folder paths)

i could n t agree more on this ;) except for the rabbit part ..it's christmas b4 you know it  :P

well what i ment by that is that the 'clicks everything' types wont figure out the default folder problem at first.... (the 'why cant winmx find my shared files' questions would be unending since limewire users just use limewires default folder...)

i did n t think it through thát far ..lol.. in that case maybe they would allready have binned winmx (because of incomplete-completed files etc etc)  b4 asking questions leaving us the sensible users ...that would be verry nice yeah
