Downloading problems.
« on: June 27, 2006, 06:01:22 pm »
Hi, I have been using WinMX for quite some time now and have never really had any problems dowloading or sharing songs. It now seems that I can't download songs at all. If I search for a song and then download it, it will start to download and then just suddenly stop for no reason that I can think of.  Now I know that it isn't stopping due to the other person disconnecting or anything like thiat. It just stops for no reason that I can think of. I'm using the latest version also. Can anyone give me any advice as to what to do to solve this problem? Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

My First thought when reading this type of issue is usually fake files.. they have recently change tactics and since also change some of the content they are flooding.. so first thing for you to do is make sure you have the latest patch from here

www.winmxgroup.com/

This will filter 99.9% of fakes from your searches.. give that a try and let us know if this continues for you..

Do you get any error messages when it stops?

Do you use XP Firewall and if you do, can you remove winmx as a exception and allow it to be readded.
If you dont make sure its off, as it likes to re-enable itself.
Its also worth a go to remove it from other software filrewalls and allow it to ask you again.

Do you have a router or DSL Modem that has NAT or router like ability?

I don't get any error messages at all. It will start to download then after a few seconds the time that it takes to download will increase by hours and then it just stops. I don't use XP firewall, i'm currently using a ZoneAlarms firewall. I can remove it from the allow list and then readd it to the list (I haven't actually tried that yet) I'm also currently using a DSL modem. I'm not sure if my modem had a NAT or router like ability to be honest.

Removing it in Zone Alarm and readding is worth a try, ZA is known to cause problems with WinMx on some systems.
Maybe try disabling ZA completely to find out if it's in fact the culprit.

I've since tried both of your suggestions and still no luck. I find it really baffling as i've never really had any problems and this problem only started about three weeks ago.

Sounds like ISP traffic shaping.

Thanks for that. Yep, you're right they are using ths same ISP as me. Funnily enough, my girlfriend is also having similar problems with WinMx and she is also using the same ISP as me and also the person that started the other thread. I've read the other thread that you mentioned and it seem the person who is also having similar problems to me has remedied their problem by changing their UDP to 5000. How would I go about doing this?

Its fairly easy to change the ports..

In WinMX go to Settings > IN/OUT UDP ..change that port to 5000

Then in your firewall if you have an  exception set up with the port values, be sure to change this also, Highligh the exception and click Edit, change the port here for UDP.

Last if you have a NAT device that you had to forward ports in such as a router or DSL modem that has NAT change your UDP rule to match this new port also.

That should be it, just restart WinMX when your done.. let us know..

I've managed to change the port in the WinMx settings but don't think it's possible to change the port values in the firewall that i'm currently using. Do you think it would be best if I just changed ISPS?

If your firewall doesn't allow changing ports as such, the easy approach is to remove & re-add the rule when the firewall asks, as it wil (usually) make the rules for whatever port is in use.

Our Tutorials section has instructions for some common firewalls.. it might be worth a look.

I think i'm going to have to change ISPS now. I'm pretty annoyed by this as I have never had any other problems and have been using WinMX for sometime. I think i'm going to complain to my ISP before I do change.

I've already tried the remove and re-add procedure but it hasn't changed a thing. I'm think i'm going to have to get one of the firewalls that are mentioned in the tutorial in order for me to change ports. Once i've done that i'll post the outcome on here.
