Fakes or not?
« on: November 01, 2006, 02:01:44 pm »
I'm not sure if this is where I should post this message........since I don't
think anyone really even knows this but.........right this minute there are
at least 20 files under Cat Stevens..........which are NOT Cat Stevens!!!!

I have tried messaging the users of these files......seems most have their
privacy setting on.

Anyway........for the record........Cat Stevens did NOT EVER do "Cats in the Cradle"
that would be Harry Chapin

He did not do "Love is in the Air"/John Paul Young
He did not do "Bad Bad Leory Brown"/Jim Croce
He did not do "Stuck in the Middle with You"/Steelers Wheel
He did not do "You've got a Friend"/James Taylor

I wish everyone could correct these files..............it's beginning to snowball!!!!!!

Thanks.......I think I coverd all of them.

Hi KatieSue,

Thanks for your post and yes this is the 'right spot' for this..

Those are fakes produced by the industry Netsentry and Macrovision to be exact.. they utilize the full path search function of WinMX to allow those files to show up in searches for other artists..

There is lots of good info on this trick here:
https://www.winmxworld.com/tutorials/filtering_fakes.html
and
https://www.winmxworld.com/tutorials/fake_file_info.html

The best defense against this is to be using the WinMX Group Patch which eliminates these results by the IPs they use to upload them...

Well, it might be some users who may be thinking of something and have put the name to something. In simple words, stupid.
Just ignore them and you should be fine I think. ;)

Cheers :P
Reconnect to winmx with the blocking patch :)

Spread the word now :)

OKay, those are not fakes produced by the Industry.. they are mislabeled files..

We cant really do anything about those as a whole.. however I can see your point in wanting to tell folks these things maybe in the hopes that those users with files of that nature shared would think about renaming..

I have seen this and for some reason there are just some artists that this happens to regularly Wierd AL is one.. hes getting blamed/credited for all sorts of spoof songs he didnt do.. and then there is Bonnie Raitt.. shes a common one to see mislabeled.. lots of the old classics from the big band era.. Nat King Cole i love and have seen lots of his stuff that isnt his stuff but is labeled by him..

It can be frustrating but i agree best is to ignore it if you cant reach the source...

Thanks......felt bad doing it but "Ignored" 24 users.
Can anyone tell me if I need to close the program for it to take effect?
These users still come up in my searches.

OH yea.......add "Leaving on a Jet Plane" and "Brown Eyed Girl"
to the list of "NOT CAT STEVENS"

I really wish there was a way to notify these people.......I was only able
to message one of them.

We didnt mean ignore as in Ignore button, because that will not keep them from your searches.  We simply meant ignore as in dont pay any attention to them.. because you cant help them fix it if you cant message them.

But, no you dont have to restart for Ignored users to take effect, this will keep them from your que and from being able to message you.

Sorry it's took this long to respond but I've only just seen this post lol. I'm pretty sure that Cat Stevens did Cats in the cradle.

NO........Cat Stevens NEVER did the song "Cats in the Cradle".  Harry Chapin did that song.
Cat Stevens did however.............put out an album called "Cat's Cradle" released in London.
I believe in 1977.  As you can see I did some research.  Thanks for your reply.

It seems you know what you want, thats always a good start. I am working on getting some rare and old media that i can share on WinMx. Give me time and hopefully you will all see a slight difference.

LOL, very annoying. David Allan Coe is another artist who is mis-credited with all kinds of stuff...And then there's the file that claims to be Elvis, Sinatra and John Lennon all singing together.  :? Yeah right . :)

Anyway something weird happened just now tho', I typed in "Nick Drake" , I was after a copy of the Cello Song in a hurry. The return was seven hundred and fifty available files of the track Pink Moon, with very many users appearing to share more than a dozen copies of the same song. More, only about a dozen songs came up in the search that were not Pink Moon.
Hmmmm.

I am familiar with the spammy search returns that used to happen back when I was an MXPie casualty, but this seems a bit weird eh?

A reply to a very old thread, but...

FWIW, Cat Stevens DID do Cat's in the Cradle, and if my memory serves me correct, it was on his Teaser and the Firecat album

And i have seen lots of stuff misnamed as John Denver, or JD's work mislabelled to other artists, but the real find was the Jimi Hendrix Star Spangled Banner at Woodstock video mislabelled as Willie Nelson et al Seven Spanish Angels.mp3
