maybe it's me or my system but when i unzipp the host file it opens a box that says "File hosts is password protected. please enter the password in the box below" and give option for ok/skip file/cancel. I got here buy saving to folder above instaed of opening right away and having it go to a temp file. should it try it that way?

I didn't even unzip the file, I just copied it right of the zipped folder and pasted it into the C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc folder and clicked yes to overwrite the existing file.

Okay ppl heres the deal

If you have a different operating system the file path maybe diferent

ME users its C:\Windows

Thanks toma

Do a search of your computer for Hosts  then find the on in your system folder replace it with the new one and restart mx.

the file has to go in your C:\Windows\system32\drivers\etc  folder

When you unzip the file simply choose to EXtract to > then browse for you hard drive > Windows > system32 > drivers > etc   folder  (the etc is an actual FOLDER NAME).

once you have it highlighted on your WinZip click extract , this will replace the host file you already have..

Now restart WinMX and give er a few mins...

When using the patch there is no etc folder on Millienium Edition, where do you put the "host" file on ME please :)

For ANY version of windows, installed to the C:\windows folder, search that folder for file name "hosts"  and don't forget to
  • enable searching subfloders

examine the existing "hosts" file to make sure it is unused and the only 'uncommented' entry, if any, is:

127.0.0.1       localhost

Some privacy aps use the "hosts" file to block parasitic ads and banners.

http://www.sensiblesoftware.com/articles/a/Use-the-HOSTS-File-to-Block-Web-Sites.html

If it isn't being used, then rename it to hosts.original  or hosts.old

If it is in use, open the existing "hosts" file in notepad and and this new "hosts" file in another notepad and copy and paste the contents of the winmxmagic "hosts" file into the original file..  Then save the file.  Becareful notepad does not rename it to hosts.txt as it likes to do with file names that do not have extentions.  If it does, just rename "hosts.txt" to "hosts"

IF your windows OS was installed in the default directories and not something like C:\winDOZE ... it should be located as follows:

Windows 95/98/Me:
   --- C:\windows

Windows XP:
   --- C:\windows\system32\drivers\etc

Windows NT:/Windows 2000
   --- C:\winnt\system32\drivers\etc

caveate:

The host file can also be used in malicious ways by the authors of spyware and viruses. It is similar to ad blocking with the host file, but instead of redirecting advertising servers to dummy ones, popular websites are redirected to an advertiser's server. This technique is known as hijacking. The Qhosts trojan hijacked many search engines such as Google and Altavista and redirected them to a site specified by the author.

Other malware such as Mydoom.B may just block the user from visiting sites about security and the removal of viruses. These sites included the makers of popular anti-virus software and Microsoft's Windows Update page to make the removal of the software more difficult for novice users.

That said, I'm using it.  and it works..

if your hard drive is D then use that if your operating system is on that drive the most important thing is to make sure you put this in

Windows > System32 > Drivers > Etc

then restart mx...

I also takes a while to first get connected so be patient...

If your not connecting its in the wrong place
There are more then one drivers folder on your windows system

BE SURE ITS IN SYSTEM32 folder

Just a minor thing noted but shouldn't this be called a workaround or "fix" instead of a patch?  The file patches nothing, it's merely several hosts redirected to a single IP.  Calling a replacement hosts file a "patch" is misleading and using incorrect terminology.

Yes you may be correct in saying this is a fix.. i agree and for simplicities sake only have we been using the term patch..
