Quote from: me here
Sept 20th at 12:00 somewhere time WinMX had to shut down... on Sept 23rd at 12:00 somewhere time Winmx users said FUCK that and reopened it....

As you know the peer caches that allow us to connect to other primaries on the WinMX Peer Network where forced to shut down over impending litigations.  As soon as this started the GREAT community that we all know and love came together to find a fix.  Approximatly 6 hours ago a fix was made by Mr Drac.  A long time WinMX programer.  His great work enabled other programers like our own KM to develope a patch that will work!!!

Viva La WinMX

Excellant work..

A couple questions.. this hosts files points to an 82.*.*.* IP
Another file was posted [I *think* here earlier] pointing to a 205.*.*.* IP

IF people load different similar hosts files that point to different peer cache servers, wouldn't that then create multiple, separate, smaller winmx networks?

Or are those servers linked, mirrored, so that they cache the same primaries?

A great effort, but I hope the winmx community doesn't splinter into such separate groups based on which underground peer cahe server their hosts file points them to.

Even if all use the same peerserver, I fear many or most users will give up, not knowing that all this has taken place and not being at all familiar or comfortable locating, renaming and replacing that hosts file.  I forsee lots of hand holding and hand wringing in the coming days as we try to regroup.

again, my deepest appreciation to the geeks behind the scenes for their gift.

if your using windows xp the correct path is

C:\windows\system32\drivers\etc

In that folder is a file called Hosts

That one needs renamed to 'oldhosts' and then extract the one you downloaded from our site and place it in this folder

Then restart WinMX

a wonderful user has posted other file  paths for other operating systems ..

read up .. ^^^

first worked, now no primary connection
« Reply #51 on: September 23, 2005, 04:49:51 pm »
I updated my host file, rebooted my machine (Win98), started up WinMx and everything worked great. Had some things to do so I shutdown WinMx, left computer on, and now when I start WinMx, I get numerous scondary connections but it doesn't make a primary connection? I tried rebooting, but its the same. Is there a limit to how many folks can use the patch at once?

Thanks for the great work!

ok. i used to have ME, reformatted to 2000. I have a C and D drive. On C I have WINDOWS, on D I have WINNT. The hosts file is in D/WINNT/SYSTEM32/DRIVERS/ETC. No hosts file on C drive. I renamed the hosts file on D drive to oldhosts. I copied patch into there and waited. No go. I also tried copying it to WINDOWS on C drive. No go.

My directories are strange, so can you guide me as to where I'm supposed to put the patch. Thanks.
