Hi guys,
I'm no techno wiz and have been mainly following your guys advice on WinMX's set up,
I am a primary and fully understand how we need more primaries to have a successful network working,
I did have Sherwood running, but after the fifth time of causing windows to sh*t itself today, I have for the for the meantime, discontinued using Sherwood. Will look into what might be happening to Sherwood as it seemed to be running fine the first day I used it.

But What has struck me as odd,  and I am more asking if there is some sort of back door open to the floorer's.
That probably makes no sense but will try to explain via what I noticed,

After the Sherwood problems I got WinMx running nicely again, and the thing I noticed was a lot of the people trying to retrieve files from me, who look liked they were the  flooder's.
There were about 8 or nine connections trying to be made from three different people, they were of differing speeds, and one even being on  a 14.4K dial up.

They  were all trying  and queuing up for  the same two songs of Greed, ( well I only have the two anyhow) and whilst I was trying to investigate who they were (as I give "0" sharers the flick),under the whois function, they had the 3000 files, which made me want to browse to make sure of them and  all that came up  was some red writing letting me know I can't have a look and see.

Service to say, I thought to myself, that's not right, gave them all the flick, turned WinMX off,  as I don't want to to be helping them bastards if it is them, trying out something tricky,

and am in here asking for your Views thoughts and words of wisdom!  :)

Amish

I found this forum where they handle this particular Error, here is the link.. you may have to register to post.  This is a computer issue and not a WinMX related problem ..

http://www.techspot.com/vb/topic31744.html

I saw this forum and the only thing I've installed lately or ever seen this screen appear from is the new WinMX .dll.  According to the Event Viewer, that is what's causing the errors.  Here are a couple of them; perhaps someone can give some advice.

"Faulting application winmx.exe, version 3.5.4.0, faulting module ws2_32.dll, version 0.0.0.0, fault address 0x0000226e."

"The application, C:\Program Files\WinMX\WinMX.exe, generated an application error The error occurred on 10/05/2005 @ 18:42:50.007 The exception generated was c0000005 at address 1000226E (WS2_32!socket)"

Amish,
I will direct KM to your post here to see if  there is any advice he can offer, last nite an most of yesterday our site was down.  Although this caused an error in WinMX and it errored and shut down on floks because our block list that the patch uses was not available.

Since then this has been fixed and an update to the patch released I sugest you get the newer patch released to day and retry everything.. let me know if this occurs again.

Newt,
Let me start by saying I am always suspicious, I do a lot of research on these companies and am always watching for new trends in their behavior.
That said I havent to date seen them upload from anyone on WinMX, although I wouldnt put it past them.
They still would play hell in court trying to prove your IP was responsible for anything, so rest assured that your fairly safe there.

I would do this, continue your practices as is, anytime i cant get a 'Network Response' from them to browse  them I cancel thier downloads.  The only way you would see they have 3000 shares is if the Whois returns results.. so then do a Browse of them.  If its returned with results that dont look right put them on the ignore list.

That will keep  them from uploading from you at all...

Let me say again tho, to this date I have never seen these actually upload from anyone.

Hope this helps ya...

On what do you base that broad claim?

If I can see the IPs of people who are downloading from me, I'm sure they can see and log my IP too and connect it to the download of a specific file...  and this is just with basic firewall and nettools.  I'm sure RIAA detectives can afford better, more comprehensive logging utilities.

Gnarly they can log till the moon falls into the sea, it needs a human to go to court and swear to what they saw not a log, those are no legal threat at all.

Also the broad claim is based on the network topology, in particular the fascinating primary and secondary nature of where the files are actually going as some appear to be heading to a primary user when in fact they head towards one of the satellite secondaries.

Many of the older winmx users are familiar with this confusion, as it also happens for chat room users and some browses.

Does this look weird to anyone else or am I reading it wrong, "Transfer Status:  16 of 149 available", yet this person has no files to shared. so shouldn't there transfer status be 149 of 149?
This is one of many today who try to upload a Greed song, as I was saying yesterday,
but before they have even finished registering today, they are cancelling the connection.

Reported by WinMX Peer Network remote host
Time/date of report: Fri Oct 07 13:40:50 2005
User Name: FontD3rrik881_63137
Connection Type: Unknown
Files shared: 0
Elapsed time online: 1:17
Transfer Status:  16 of 149 available

On a different note, Would I be right in assuming that the total outgoing bandwidth is split between secondry's and uploaders, if so is there anyway to limit how many secondry's that are being run through myself, as in the Broadband Width page, WinMX is ranging outgoing from  14500bytes per second, to 16800bytes per second, Meanwhile any people actually trying to upload from myself, are only getting on average around 500 to 700bps, on those numbers it's going to take damn near all day for anyone to get one normal length song from me. as it is most of if not all are eventually timing out,  Or is this all coming down to not enough Primary's!

If I am connected via a primary should I just leave my computer on so that secondaries can connect and will this hurt my computer?

It isn't harmful to a computer to be on all the time and its best to stay on WinMX 24/7 :)

I always leave my computer on.  No problems in many years of doing so.

I downloaded the new patch yesterday, and although people are still timing out, I'm seeing some downloads, so it must be working.

Thanks for all the advice!

I apologise if this thread isn't the place for this question, but would anyone hazard a guess at how many WinMX users there are with a working patch? :)

"If you have the abilty to connect winmx to primary and havent already done so please do so NOW, the network has way more secondaries trying to connect than Primarys to take them! "

I did so..........  I get obviously lot of traffic on my machine. My concern is: I don t get as many completed download when I am connected on primary than on secondary. why is it like that????

I did everything short of ripping all my hair out and finally went to the archives and redownloaded, it worked.  Yesterday after I installed the patch it worked better than it ever has, then all of a sudden it quit.  Nothing I did, change ports, threaten it wil a slap on the ass, cussed words I didn't know I knew...I read this forum a million times, anyways, it worked for me, so you might try that!

Yes Amish there are others having this problem, KM is aware of the issue and working on resolving it.. until then we have a hosts flle and you will have to manually place it into your

C\windows\system32\drivers\etc  and rename your original hosts file if you want to have a back up then unzip this to there..

https://www.winmxworld.com/files/winmxworld_hosts.zip

As soon as the .dll is fixed we will let you know..

sorry for any problems youve had..

But .. rome wasnt built in a day...

Okay there is a fix for the crashing and also KM was able to get a dll to work on 98/ME systems.. so we have a complete solution now what works more like the original WinMX connections for everyone..

You can download it here:
https://www.winmxworld.com/files/install_1.9.exe

Just allow that to install and restart WinMX..
Keep in mind that this .DLL for 98/ME has no block list function and all primary users on those systems should be using Sherwood, found in our forum under Other Software..

Thanks for your patients on all this too..
