Also for 98/ME you can try the hosts file fix from winmxworld
 hosts_file_for_me_98.

  download

Quote
This Self Installing and updated Hosts file includes all Peer Cache servers for faster connection times.
Again, this is a self installing file, simply double click and allow to install.

Once you have finished the installation then restart WinMX, remember that the hosts files are not as speedy or efficient as the WS2_32.dll, so be patient.

It will not overwrite your existing Hosts file, it will create a backup copy and replace it if you decide to uninstall later.

Hi Dutchess, i installed the new files and it was working beautifully this morning, but when I tried to open it later this afternoon, all I got was the yellow light, and it's still that way. I checked with a friend in another part of the country and she can't get on either. Could it be the whole system's down?

It is not the whole system ,.. there is a problem with the .dll file at present that some ppl are having .. not all.. but many

For now the best  thing to do is to move the ws2_32.dll to a seperate folder of its own and install this hosts file...

https://www.winmxworld.com/files/winmxworld_hosts.zip

Put that into your C:\windows\system32\drivers\etc folder and do a dns flush

Start > Run.. type   'cmd' then ok
Then in the dos box type  'ipconfig /flushdns'  then restart mx ..

Dont know if this will help anyone else, but...

I have Win ME.

    Used the ME fix,
Manually configured my DNS to use servers not censored by the US,
and installed a clean WinMX 3.53 after deleting the folder.[/list:u]

After a day or so of not connecting. BANG, I'm now back in biz.

We are asking folks to install the newest version of WinMX..

Its 3.54 beta 4 ..

to install it you need only replace you the unziped WinMX.exe from our Archive with the WinMX.exe from your WinMX folder in program files and restart..

httpss://archive.winmxworld.com/WinMX/Beta/winmx354beta4.zip

That belongs in your C\Program Files\WinMX folder..

then restart WinMX...

No joy :( Can't do the dns flush as you instructed. On my system, anything entered in the box must have a file extension. When I type cmd, is says it doesn't recognize it. I don't understand why it was working fine yesterday morning, then crashed.

I started by downloading the new patch, since then I was shutdown down and was told there was an error. I redid it all and then I couldn't get onto my primary connection.  So I thought I would uninstall winmx and now I can't even install it back.   I need back in. I miss WINMX.    Somebody, somewhere must have all the answers.......I would be most grateful!  Sally.

OK, I decided to uninstall and start over with 354 beta 4. Trying to set up and it's giving me the following message:

"WinMX was unable to make an outgoing connection to its test servers. This could be because this computer isn't  currently directly connected to the internet, you are on a Local Area Network (LAN) and need to use a SOCKS proxy server to make outgoing TCP connections, or there is a temporary network problem."

I have a 56k modem, I'm not on a LAN, so...is there a temporary network problem?

Thanks,
k

Recommended Port settings changes IMPROVE the network conn
« Reply #18 on: October 11, 2005, 06:13:44 pm »
I'd recommend to see vlad44 post regarding changing the winMx port setting to
(1.) Accept incoming tcp connections [accept on 16699]  &
(2.) Accept / Send UDP packets on port 16257

[[ this in addition to having the latest patch and moving the dll to a seperate folder ]]

My ports were configured to not accept any connections prior to changing them. Unfortunately I can't configure to be a primary server  however since changing the port setting as described, my network connection is now stronger than its been in 2 or 3 years.

Prior to that my max que was 50 to 60 users waiting and alot of timeouts... NOW I can easily have 100 in no time [[ and thats with no porn files. ]] ...... I made these changes a week or so ago but so far all is well.

THANK YOU  to everyone involved for all the time and effort  getting WinMx back online.
