I understand there is a 'lite' version. Just want folks to ensure they install that instead. :)

I give up, I have tried everything that has been explained to me in these forums and all to no avail, unless an old friend out there would be a kind friend and tell a ' thickie' like me how to do it

Many Thanks

if u install the lite version of ares u will not be able to host a room.  i have been usin ares for sometime now, the regular version, and it has no spyware.  that article was prolly written when ares first cae out.

the only thing that has the spyware in it, is the accelerator

Nirvana ,your free to choose what you do and do not trust, but I think that is showing your lack of understanding of how networks operate.
There isnt anything to trust or not trust, same friends running the network yesterday as today

And folks forgive me but its been a long day and this is not an ares help forum so please dicuss any Ares issues on this forum run by our good friend Vladd  :D

http://www.vladd44.com/phpbb2/viewforum.php?f=8&sid=0fd75abab9224a468a05df771b5f18a7

(Ok I admit I sneak over there to help too ..)

And yes sirena that is the correct location to place the new hosts file, you may need to reboot the machine or possible use a faster method that saves rebooting

go to the Command Prompt in Accessories  and type ipcongig/flushdns

Whatever

What operating system are you running on your PC?

What IP are you using in your Hosts file?

Forgive me.

The initial patch to fix WinMx was a 'Host' file. In simplest terms the host file can be used to redirect your PC when it comes across a name. For example www.whatever.com equals an actual IP address out there in internet land. DNS by your ISP converts the names to actual numbered addresses. It could be 123.123.123.123 or whatever. What the host file does is redirects the name to a different address bypassing your ISP's DNS. Now I'm confused.

Inside WinMx.exe it looks for certain names, for example c123.winmx.com or whatever. Your DNS from your ISP, redirected you to Frontcodes servers (I think, not relevant). Your Host file overrides that to point to a different IP address. The initial IP address in the Host file patch  is down. You need to edit your Host file and replace the IP address of 82.195.155.5 with something else. I have used 205.238.40.1 with success.

As an addendum, someone pointed out earlier that there are other errors in the original Host file patch. Spacing problems and such. I am not sure on other operating systems if it matters, but I edited my Hosts file and ensured all spacing was correct and each entry was on its own line. Im running Win98SE btw.
